Wednesday, June 10th marked Phase 3 of reopening the economy. This means that indoor dining is open at 50% capacity, with safety measures like masks and social distancing. Salons and personal services increase to 50% capacity as well, with all the same safety measures they are currently using.
New openings include pools opening at 50% capacity, fitness centers and theaters at 25% capacity up to 250 people, and churches at 50% capacity or up to 250 people. Additionally, Phase 3 includes social gatherings of 25 people or less. More information on these new guidelines can be found here.
While this is another step in the right direction, I am disappointed that these restrictions still seem arbitrary and unscientific. Instead of keeping businesses closed or severely reduced, we need to focus our efforts on protecting our nursing homes and long-term care facilities so we can begin the process of rebuilding our economy
Special Session – June 12
Also on Wednesday, it was official announced by the governor that we will be called into a special session on Friday, June 12. This was necessary due to Governor Walz once again extending his peacetime emergency powers.
The time for emergency powers has long passed. We are now past the need to make quick action and the governor’s own modeling is failing in spectacular fashion. A simple look at Wisconsin shows emergency powers aren’t necessary. The governor cannot justify extending the emergency powers but House Democrats will not vote to remove his powers.
Destruction of Public Property
This week, protesters ignored the legal avenues available for removing art from the Capitol grounds and instead pulled down a statue of Christopher Columbus. It is disappointing to have yet another example of the Walz Administration telling the public that law enforcement would protect something and then turn around and tell the State Patrol to stand down. This type of lawlessness should not be tolerated.
It is wrong to send the message, that state and city leadership will ignore public safety and allow mobs to destroy public and private property. Setting fires and destroying property are not speech, nor conducive to coming together and making changes for the better.
